Even when the weather is not cold and rainy, the Miniatur Wunderland is one of the must see attractions in Hamburg. The Miniatur Wunderland (German for miniature wonderland) is the largest model railway in the world, with over 930 trains, 215000 figurines and 13000 meters of track.
The exhibit consists of 8 Sections filled with beautiful landscapes, cars, buses, ships sailing in real water and flying planes. And if that is not enough there are also special exhibits with specific topics on the lower floor. I have been to the Miniatur Wunderland several times, and I enjoyed my visit every time. I am not a particularly big fan of model railways, I never used to play with trains when I was little, but every time I go to the Miniatur Wunderland I am completely fascinated by the amount of detail with which the scenes were made.
There is so much to see. Every time I go there I discover some new and interesting figures, like Pippi Longstocking and her horse in the Scandinavia Section and the car exhibit in the America Section.
Every 10 minutes or so the lights are dimmed and “night mode” starts (the lights in the buildings go on, all the vehicles switch on their headlights etc.). The Las Vegas part is especially nice to see at night.
For all of you who would like to get a souvenir from the Miniatur Wunderland donate for a good cause at the same time, there is a stand with pins and magnets with motives from the exhibition on the floor where the exhibitions are.
Each pin/magnet costs 2.90€ and all proceeds, including production costs will be donated each month to a different charity organization chosen by the visitors. The magnets are the ones with the red dot on the packaging. After you choose the pin or magnet you like, just put the money in the stand where the arrows are pointing. If you don’t have change you can buy the pins and magnets in the gift shop at the end of the exhibition or order them online. I chose a magnet from the Elbphilharmonie.
